The one-piece aluminum body is available in silver or gold finish. The effect is rather classy. To say, I was asked twice if it was the new iPhone!
The buttons at the bottom of the screen are capacitive. The fingerprint reader is on the back, where your index finger rests when you hold the phone – a positioning reminiscent of LG phones.
Screen and sound
The 5.5-inch display has a WQHD resolution (2560×1440 pixels), the same as the Galaxy S7, and higher than the iPhone 6s Plus display (1920×1080 pixels). A resolution that some consider imperceptible to the eye, but it is an advantage for those who want to use their phone in a virtual reality headset. The screen is AMOLED: the colors are bright, well contrasted.
In terms of sound, ZTE borrows from HTC, with front-firing stereo speakers. Music sounds great no matter how you hold the phone. The sound is nice and powerful enough not to need to use a wireless speaker to listen to music in a small room.
Two separate processors are used for high-fidelity audio, both for playback and recording; you can hear it with headphones, especially if you use high quality files. You can activate the Dolby ATMOS and Digital Surround effect for movies and some compatible games. If you use the mode with music, the bass is richer and more punchy, but the effect remains artificial and becomes annoying over time.
Camera
The 20-megapixel camera with an ƒ/1.8 aperture has optical stabilization, and shoots in 4K. You can do slow motion at 240 frames per second in 720p, and even, if you insist, at 300 frames per second in 480p. For selfies, the front camera is 8 megapixels. Photos won’t disappoint in general, if you don’t expect the quality of photos from the Galaxy S7 or iPhone 6s.
Performance and Storage
The Axon 7 uses the Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB of RAM, the same as most 2016 flagships (except the OnePlus 3, with 6GB of RAM). In use, the performance is similar.
On a le choix d’utiliser une carte SIM avec une carte microSD ou deux cartes SIM. Une deuxième carte SIM est pratique en voyage ou pour avoir deux numéros dans un seul téléphone. Le stockage de base est un généreux de 64 Go.
Le téléphone a une pile de 3 250 mAh, standard. Il est compatible avec le standard QuickCharge, pour recharger le téléphone à 50% en 30 minutes.
Interface
L’Axon 7 utilise l’interface MiFavor 4.0, basée sur Android 6.0.1. C’est fonctionnel, mais en français, il manque de finition, et c’est vraiment dommage. L’affichage de la date sur l’écran de veille indique par exemple «Juillet29ème Vendredi». Rien de grave, mais c’est le genre de détail agaçant qui rappelle que c’est un téléphone abordable.
Il y a aussi des applications préinstallées à l’utilité douteuse, comme le navigateur web au nom peut rassurant «Ume Browser», «We Share» affiché en chinois seulement, et «Outils» basée sur l’application Super Swiss Knife, qui propose une boussole, un rapporteur d’angle, un test de bruit, etc. Est-ce que c’est vraiment nécessaire?
Conclusion
L’Axon 7 a de bons haut-parleurs, un écran de résolution élevée, et un look qui ressemble drôlement à celui de l’iPhone – et il est à vous, déverrouillé et sans entente, à la moitié de son prix (si on considère que l’iPhone 6s de base n’a que 16 Go de stockage, sans possibilité d’expansion). Si vous êtes à l’aise avec Android, spécialement si vous comptez utiliser une autre interface… C’est une option à considérer sérieusement.
